Like it or not, winter is on it’s way. Saving energy is important in all seasons and sometimes all it takes is common sense to make a difference. Here are some simple things you can do which can add up in the end.
- Weather strip all the doors and windows to prevent drafts.
- Close your shades and curtains during the night to keep the heat inside and keep them open during the day to let the sun heat your home.
- Add an extra blanket to your bed instead of turning up the heat at night.
- Set your thermostat to 19 degrees in the day and 17 degrees at night.
- Buy a programmable thermostat. That way you don’t have to remember to turn down the heat at night or when you leave for work every day.
- Turn off all lights when you leave a room.
- Wash clothes in cold water when possible
- Turn off the water in the shower when you shampoo your hair or shave.
- Turn off your powerbars when electronical devices attached to it are not in use.
- Always look for ENERGY STAR ® appliances.
- Over Christmas, make sure to turn off all your decorative lights before leaving the house.
- Only run your dishwasher when it’s full. Also try to run it early in the morning or late at night.
- Use smaller appliances such as microwave, slow cooker and toaster oven instead of your stove when possible.
- Take your clothes out of the dryer right away and fold them to prevent wrinkles. You won’t need to iron them thus saving more energy.
- A low flow shower head can save up to 15% on your hot water bill.
- Make sure you close the damper in your fireplace when not in use. The heat from your home can easily escape this way.
- Have your furnace cleaned each fall in preparation for winter months. Also change your furnace filter regularly.
